As the NHL enters its stretch run, many teams will undoubtedly rely on the extra point to push their way up the standings and into playoff position. However, there is a good chance they'll have to do so without the shootout.

There has been an 18.5-percent increase in games decided in the extra period as opposed to a shootout this season, the league revealed Tuesday.

The numbers - which coincide with the implementation of three-on-three - also indicate that games requiring overtime are down slightly.

Additionally, the league released information on the Coach's Challenge, which was added this season. There have been 150 challenges, with 38 of them - 25.3 percent - overturning the call on the ice.
