Cormier-Jones II announcement expected in 'couple of days'

A rematch between light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier and Jon Jones is officially in the works, UFC vice president of public relations Dave Sholler announced Saturday.

Reporters at the UFC on FOX 18 post-fight press conference asked where main-event winner Anthony Johnson stands given that the top two fighters in the division haven't been booked to compete yet. Sholler responded by giving a loose time frame for a potential fight between Cormier and Jones.

"We expect to have an announcement within the next couple of days," said Sholler. "Things are shaking out and I think that you guys will be pleased with the outcome."

Sholler reminded the media that the UFC doesn't usually book fights right after the conclusion of a card, but the promotion would return to Las Vegas on Tuesday to discuss matchmaking.

The light heavyweight belt was around Jones' waist when he first faced off with Cormier last January, a unanimous decision win for Jones. His involvement in a hit-and-run incident in April prompted the UFC to suspend him and strip him of his title.

Johnson was set to be Jones' next challenger before the suspension. He instead fought Cormier for the vacated belt at UFC 187, which Cormier won by submission.

After Jones was reinstated in October, speculation grew that he would face Cormier in the main event of an April 23 show at Madison Square Garden. A request for a preliminary injunction to lift New York's MMA ban was denied by a federal judge, however, leaving that event and the Cormier-Jones rematch in limbo.
