New York City FC places Chris Wingert on waivers

New York City FC has placed veteran defender Chris Wingert on waivers following 27 appearances in the franchise's inaugural Major League Soccer campaign of 2015.

One-time United States international Wingert was acquired in the 2014 Expansion Draft after seven-and-a-half years with Real Salt Lake, and was reunited with Jason Kreis who was then managing NYCFC.

Under new gaffer Patrick Vieira, however, Wingert was deemed surplus to requirements with Frederic Brillant and Ronald Matarrita already brought in during the offseason to shore things up at the back.

"We'd like to thank Chris for his commitment and wish him the very best for the future," club sporting director Claudio Reyna told the club website. "Chris made an impact in our inaugural season and made a considerable effort to connect with our supporters and the local communities in New York."

New York City kicks off its second MLS season at the Chicago Fire on March 6.
