Atalanta signs Borriello from Carpi

Atalanta confirmed the permanent signing of veteran striker Marco Borriello from Carpi until the end of the season on Thursday.

Borriello, 33, reportedly attracted interest from Major League Soccer during the January transfer window as he looked for a move away from Carpi.

The former AC Milan, Roma, and Genoa man scored four goals this season in 12 league appearances for the Biancorossi. He wasn't called up to several matches this month, but maintained that he had been training with "great seriousness" despite the lack of game time.

Borriello, however, has failed to replicate the form that saw him score 19 Serie A goals during the 2007-08 season with Genoa. He has only hit the double-digit mark in league play three times since that stint.

Struggling with goals on its own, Atalanta could use any form of help. It has averaged just a goal a game, and slipped from its position in the top half of the table to its current 13th-place standing.

The club is also about to lose longtime forward German Denis, who is set for a transfer to Argentinian club Independiente.
