5-star DT Benito Jones sets up Ole Miss as long-term powerhouse

Nelson Chenault-USA TODAY Sports

No Robert Nkemdiche? No problem.

Ole Miss restocked its shelf at defensive line with the signing of five-star defensive tackle Benito Jones from Waynesboro, Miss.

Jones should immediately step into the spot formerly held by the NFL-bound Nkemdiche and have just as much - if not more - of an impact.

Jones heads to Oxford known as both an elite run-stopper and pass-rusher from the interior position. Between him and D.J. Jones, a top defensive tackle recruit last year, the Rebels look primed to dominate the trenches, now and in the future, in a conference that is usually won at the line of scrimmage.

Jones comes in at No. 7 in the ESPN 300 and is the fourth-best defensive tackle recruit in the country. The recruiting trifecta of Jones, five-star offensive tackle Greg Little, and elite quarterback prospect Shea Patterson has the Rebels in line to contend not just for Sugar Bowls, but for national titles for at least the next three years.

The Wayne County High School product has been committed to Ole Miss since 2014, and he chose the Rebels over Alabama, Florida State, Georgia, and Mississippi State.
