Martinez urges more risk from Ross Barkley in final third

Roberto Martinez wants greater adventure from midfielder Ross Barkley as Everton nears the opposition goal, and would even accept a worse pass completion percentage as a result.

The 22-year-old has an impressive pass success figure of 87.5 percent heading into the Toffees' hosting of Swansea City on Sunday - silencing England manager Roy Hodgson's earlier claims that he can be careless in possession - but Martinez wants more risk from Barkley in the final third.

"Sometimes I want him to miss more passes," Martinez said. "When you are looking at the three thirds of a pitch, I want him to be 100 percent (accurate) in the middle and defensive thirds but in the final third he needs to risk more."

Everton has drawn more than any other team in the Premier League, most notably losing winning positions deep into injury time against Bournemouth in November and Chelsea last week.

Despite the late lapses in concentration at the back, Martinez is looking forward and believes Barkley has the potential to add to his seven top-flight assists this term.

"I would like to have 60 percent completion in the final third, rather than have that high percentage; 90 to 100 percent in the other two thirds but here 60 percent," he said.

"Now Ross is outstanding in the final third at scoring goals and getting into good goal-scoring positions but I think he needs to risk and be a bit more adventurous in his play. That would be the final thing for him."

Everton welcomes Swansea to Goodison Park this weekend seeking a sixth straight competitive outing without defeat.
