Nadal upset in 1st round at Australian Open by Verdasco

Rafael Nadal's Australian Open is already over.

The No. 5 seed was upset in a shocker Tuesday by unranked Fernando Verdasco in five sets, after being up two sets to one. It's Nadal's first opening-round exit in Melbourne.

Nadal, after losing the fourth set in a tiebreaker, didn't put up much of a fight in the fifth and deciding set, losing 6-2. Verasco won six games in a row to win the match.

That Nadal's major is over in only four hours and 41 minutes is shocking, despite his erratic play last season.

"The match is a tough loss for me," Nadal said, according to ESPN. "Obviously is tough, especially because is not like last year that I arrived here playing bad and feeling myself not ready for it.

"This year was a completely different story. I have been playing and practicing great and working so much," he added. "You know, is tough when you work so much and arrives a very important event and you're going out too early."

Verdasco, meanwhile, was on top of the world.

"I think I played unbelievable," he said.

He did. Verdasco had his opponent running - Nadal logged an extra half-mile during the course of the match - and he was aggressive, hitting 53 more winners than Nadal. He also broke Nadal three times in the final set.

Nadal's lost four of his last six five-set matches.
