Report: Michigan grants RB Derrick Green release, will seek transfer

Rick Osentoski-USA TODAY Sports

Michigan has granted former prized recruit Derrick Green his release, and he will seek a transfer to a different program, a source told John Taylor of NBC Sports.

The junior came to Michigan as ESPN's fifth-ranked running back in the country for 2013, but failed to meet lofty expectations throughout his Wolverines career. The Virginia native's best season came in 2014, when he rushed for 471 yards and three touchdowns before missing the last half of the campaign due to injuries.

Since Jim Harbaugh took over for Brady Hoke to start the 2015 campaign, Green saw a drop in action, carrying the ball only 47 times for 157 yards last season. He failed to travel with the team for the Citrus Bowl on Jan. 1 due to an internal matter.

Green will be eligible to play immediately in 2016 wherever he lands as a graduate transfer.
