In an effort to prevent future injury, Tony Romo is planning to undergo surgery to fortify his left collarbone, according to ESPN's Ed Werder.

The Dallas Cowboys quarterback will first have a CT scan to determine whether there's been enough healing to support the surgical hardware needed to fortify the bone, Werder reports.

Romo has fractured his collarbone three times in the past five years, including twice during the 2015 season. In his absence, the Cowboys were 1-11.

Owner Jerry Jones has spoken numerous times about a need for a competent backup and eventual successor for Romo, and said earlier this month that the Cowboys would be open to taking a quarterback in the first round of the 2016 NFL Draft.
