Group files suit over new Warriors arena's proximity to hospital

Kelley L Cox-USA TODAY Sports

A community group has filed a lawsuit in an effort to block the Golden State Warriors' new arena in downtown San Francisco. The problem, the Mission Bay Alliance says, is the proposed facility's proximity to a children's hospital.

"Some people will die trying to get to the hospital if this stadium is built next to the emergency room," the suit against the commission, city, and county of San Francisco states.

The arena would stand 1,000 feet from the UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital. The concerns regard traffic and pedestrian flow while events are taking place.

Groundbreaking was scheduled to take place this year with the intention of having the Warriors play in the building for the 2018-19 season. The team already abandoned plans for a previous arena on San Francisco's Pier 32 after a groundswell of local opposition.

The Warriors have played across the bay in Oakland since 1972.
