Houston Texans defensive end J.J. Watt underwent sports hernia surgery, a source told Adam Schefter of ESPN.

Watt's surgery took place in Philadelphia.

The Texans and Watt referred to the ailment as a "groin injury," but never gave any other specific details, other than to say it was significant.

Watt appeared to exacerbate the injury during Saturday's wild-card loss to the Kansas City Chiefs.

The 26-year-old did reveal earlier in the week that he'd been suffering through an injury for a large portion of the season.

"I know for a fact we gotta fix something, that's for sure," Watt said, according to Adam Bennett of KHOU 11 News. "It's something we've been dealing with for probably six or seven weeks now, and our training staff's done a great job of just getting me out there on the field so I can play. Sunday was kind of the breaking point."
