Zidane: Bale remains a fundamental player at Madrid

Zinedine Zidane confirmed that Gareth Bale is disappointed by Real Madrid's sacking of Rafa Benitez, but vowed to treat the Welshman the same way Benitez did.

"I understand that Gareth might be upset with Rafa Benitez's departure, as he was an important coach for him, but he will get the same affection from me as from Rafa," Zidane told reporters Tuesday following his first training session as manager.

Bale enjoyed his best form of the season in the final few games under Benitez. There were suggestions in the British press that Benitez had intended to sell Cristiano Ronaldo and give Bale a more prominent role in the team next season.

Monday's announcement only seemed to fuel reports that Bale would seek a move away from the Bernabeu and back to the Premier League.

But Zidane said the 26-year-old will get all of his support.

"He is a fundamental player for the team, playing really well lately. I cannot say anything other than that," said Zidane.

Apart from winning games - which he realises is the most important thing - the 43-year-old Frenchman wants to have a good relationship with his players, and hopes to see them express themselves freely on the pitch.

Zidane also confirmed that he will play with three attackers and keep the vaunted front line of Bale, Karim Benzema, and Ronaldo in place.

"That is the idea," he said. "Of course."
