The San Diego Chargers have given head coach Mike McCoy a one-year contract extension that runs through the 2017 season.

General manager Tom Telesco made the announcement Friday, saying that "Mike (McCoy) is somebody we want to build around".

McCoy's extension means he and Telesco will continue to lead the Chargers for the foreseeable future, with the general manager under contract through the 2019 season.

The Chargers' 2015 season did not go as planned, with the team winning just four games after two consecutive winning seasons in 2013 and 2014.

"We had to look at it as big picture instead of this year," Telesco said.

Telesco also said it was McCoy's decision to relieve six assistant coaches of their duties earlier in January.
