VIDEO: Former ref Howard Webb admits fault for World Cup no-call

Retired Premier League referee Howard Webb has admitted his error in not adjudging a red card during the 2010 World Cup final between Spain and the Netherlands.

Webb, who now works as an analyst for BT Sport in England, was heavily criticised following the final for failing to brandish a straight red card for Dutch midfielder Nigel De Jong's horrific challenge on Spain's Xabi Alonso.

Speaking on BT Sport's "Fletch & Sav" alongside former players Ian Wright, Robbie Savage, and Steve McManaman, Webb conceded that he checked his phone at the half to see the assessment of his colleagues, coming to the realisation that he was wrong only to show De Jong a yellow card despite the magnitude of the fixture.

Webb, who used to moonlight as a police officer during his days of top-flight officiating, received a text from a colleague at the half that characterized the Dutchman's tackle as "an arrestable offence."
