MLB to investigate doping allegations against Howard, Zimmerman

Eric Hartline / USA TODAY Sports

Major League Baseball will investigate claims against Philadelphia Phillies first baseman Ryan Howard and Washington Nationals infielder Ryan Zimmerman regarding their alleged use of performance-enhancing drugs.

Howard, Zimmerman, and Taylor Teagarden were all named in a documentary by Al Jazeera - called "The Dark Side - Secrets of the Sports Dopers" - devised to expose PED users in sports. Denver Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning is the centerpiece of the undercover report.

"We intend to conduct a thorough investigation," a league spokesperson told Jon Morosi of FOX Sports. "(MLB) was not made aware of the allegations until yesterday and was provided no information other than what has been reported."

Neither Howard nor Zimmerman were shown on camera, though pharmacist Charlie Sly claimed he worked with both players. Teagarden, however, was shown discussing his use of the hormone supplement Delta 2 as recently as this year.

"I used it last year, I was scared to be honest with you," Teagarden said. "I took it for like two weeks, and I had a test four weeks after my last administration of it. Nothing happened."

William Burck, the attorney for both Howard and Zimmerman, denied any wrongdoing on behalf of his clients. Sly also denied any truth to his involvement prior to the report being aired.
