Washington State holds off Miami in snowy Sun Bowl

James Snook-USA TODAY Sports

It was less of a Sun Bowl and more of a Snow Bowl as Washington State held off Miami's comeback bid with a 20-14 win Saturday.

Luke Falk threw for 295 yards and two touchdowns as the Cougars were able to secure their first winning season since 2003.

Though the game came down to the wire, Miami botched the game with two turnovers on its final two possessions of the game.

Here's what you need to know:

  • The pivotal plays of the game came on Miami's final two possessions. Miami appeared to score the go-ahead touchdown with five minutes left in the game, but celebrations were short-lived as the Hurricanes were called back for an illegal block.
  • On the same set of downs, Miami fumbled the ball on second-and-goal, giving the ball away, and a shot at going ahead in the game.
  • The next time Miami got the ball, it executed an odd play call - handing the ball to running back Joseph Yearby, who threw a pick on a bonehead trick play to all but end the Hurricanes' season.
  • Washington State came out flying as the Cougars scored 20 points in the first half, yet was shutout in the second half.
  • With that, defense ruled the day, as WSU stumped Miami in the first half, while the Hurricanes' defense came up clutch in the second.
  • Despite the shoddy weather, Falk managed to move the ball well, throwing for 295 yards and two touchdowns on 29-of-53 passing.
  • Washington State touchdowns came from wide receivers Gabe Marks and Jamal Morrow.
  • Across the gridiron, Miami quarterback Brad Kaaya was clearly bothered by the conditions, but it didn't stop him from throwing for 219 yards, one touchdown, and one interception.

Play of the Game

With Miami driving late in the game, it appeared as though it took the lead with a touchdown. Instead, that was called back due to an illegal block in the backfield. On the same drive, the Hurricanes fumbled the ball away on the Washington State goal line, all but sealing the game.
