Report: Cardinals, Rockies discussing trade for outfielder

After shoring up their rotation Tuesday by handing right-hander Mike Leake a five-year deal, the St. Louis Cardinals have reportedly shifted their focus towards improving their outfield.

The Cardinals are engaged in trade dialogue with the Colorado Rockies about their outfielders, according to Jon Morosi of FOX Sports, who notes Carlos Gonzalez, Charlie Blackmon, and Corey Dickerson are all available.

Though St. Louis fielded one of the game's strongest outfields in 2015, the departure of Jason Heyward looms large for the reigning division champions, while both Matt Holliday and Brandon Moss are liable to become free agents after the 2016 campaign.

The Rockies' trio of outfielders have been bandied about in trade rumors for months, with the acquisition cost expected to vary significantly among the three.

The Cardinals appear to have the financial flexibility to accommodate Gonzalez's hefty salary, as general manager John Mozeliak admitted to making a "robust" offer to Heyward that, according to multiple reports, was worth no less than $200 million.

And despite telling reporters he probably won't chase an outfielder after losing out on Heyward, who landed an eight-year deal with the Chicago Cubs, Mozeliak may still be inclined to make a deal considering the inexperience of both Stephen Piscotty and Randal Grichuk.
