Toledo's Ely delivers in Boca Raton Bowl victory over Temple

Tim Fuller-USA TODAY Sports

After learning earlier in the day the NCAA had denied his request for a sixth year of eligibility, Toledo quarterback Phillip Ely knew the Boca Raton Bowl would be his final collegiate game.

He did not disappoint, throwing for 285 yards and two touchdowns as the Rockets knocked off No. 24 Temple to capture the second edition of the bowl.

Here's What You Need to Know:

  • Ely didn't seem bothered by frequent rain throughout the contest, completing 20-of-28 passes and posting his highest yardage since Nov. 10.
  • Rockets receiver Cody Thompson torched the Owls' defense for 119 yards, with 80 coming on a crucial fourth-quarter touchdown.
  • Toledo's Jason Candle won his first game as head coach after being promoted from his offensive coordinator position following Matt Campbell's departure to Iowa State.
  • Temple played the entire second half without leading rusher Jahad Thomas, who exited with a knee injury at the break.
  • Toledo's defense held the Owls to just 99 yards on the ground, well below their season average of 153.

Play Of The Game

Following a late Temple touchdown to make it a one-score game, the Owls appeared to recover an onside kick. But, after a lengthy pileup, and much deliberation, the officials awarded the ball to the Rockets, effectively ending the comeback.

That pivotal onside kick was *close* but didn't go Temple's way: #BocaRatonBowl

Toledo hit the 10-win mark for the first time since 2001, while Temple finished 10-4 - the program's best record since 1979.
