Report: Phillips wanted 'significant benefit' to accept trade to Nats

Frank Victores / USA TODAY Sports

Brandon Phillips isn't prepared to leave the Queen City quietly.

The Cincinnati Reds reportedly had a deal in place to trade the second baseman to the Washington Nationals last week, though talks hit a standstill after Phillips refused to waive his full no-trade protection.

Phillips, who has two years, $27 million remaining on his deal, reportedly asked for a "significant benefit" in order to approve the deal, according to Mark Sheldon of MLB.com. Though Sheldon is unsure of the exact request from Phillips, it is believed that it could have involved a possible extension, added money, or both.

A deal between the two sides now appears unlikely, unless Phillips should change his mind and waive his rights in order to agree to a trade.

Phillips has become a fan favorite in Cincinnati over the past decade with the organization. The 34-year-old is coming off a season in which he hit .294/.328/.395 with 12 home runs and 23 stolen bases. Additionally, his .723 OPS was the highest it's been since 2012.

The Reds have taken significant strides in order to expedite their rebuild, but have been blocked on a pair of transactions this offseason. While they managed to trade Todd Frazier, the Reds were unsuccessful in dealing both Aroldis Chapman and Phillips in the past month.

Washington currently has an opening at second base with Ian Desmond hitting free agency, as well as having traded Yunel Escobar to the Los Angeles Angels.
