Jones appreciates Orioles' efforts to re-sign Davis

Baltimore Orioles star center fielder Adam Jones is happy with the front office's efforts, even though the club could lose Chris Davis.

Orioles general manager Dan Duquette said Saturday there's no longer an offer on the table for the free-agent slugger after reportedly offering him a deal in the range of $150 million. While Jones is disappointed Davis may not return, he appreciates that the team's making good on its promise to remain competitive.

"By what they're doing right now, offering seven years and north of $150 (million), I think they've grabbed a hold of what I wanted to get through to them," Jones told Roch Kubatko of MASN.

"That's all I asked. I didn't ask to do this. I said, 'Just make the effort, show not just me, but show the city, show the fans that you're making a conscious effort to keep this team intact because as a core, we have a really good team. If you take away pieces of it, it's not that good for the team.'"

Disappointed with the front office last offseason after both Nick Markakis and Nelson Cruz weren't retained, Jones vowed to play a bigger role in the team's recruitment this winter.

Facing a crucial offseason, the Orioles managed to retain catcher Matt Wieters and right-handed reliever Darren O'Day. They also landed first baseman/corner outfielder Mark Trumbo in a trade with the Seattle Mariners.

"I think (Trumbo)'s going to be a tremendous addition to our team, a guy with a lot of power, and I've heard nothing but good things from other guys that I talked to about him," Jones said.

Duquette said the team's priority right now is adding a left-handed hitting outfielder.
