Davey O'Brien Award goes to Clemson's Watson
Clemson's Deshaun Watson was honored Thursday night with the Davey O'Brien Award, given to the top quarterback in college football.
Watson was spectacular in his sophomore season, passing for 3,512 yards, 30 touchdowns and 11 interceptions while adding another 887 yards, and 11 touchdowns on the ground. He led the Tigers to a perfect 13-0 record, an ACC championship, and the No. 1 ranking in the country, leading to a date with No. 4 Oklahoma in the College Football Playoff semifinal.
Watson faced stiff competition for the honor, but managed to take it ahead of Oklahoma's Baker Mayfield, and TCU's Trevone Boykin. He becomes the first quarterback from Clemson to ever capture the award.
Winning the O'Brien Award may bode well for Watson's chances at claiming the coveted Heisman Trophy on Saturday. The previous five O'Brien winners, Marcus Mariota, Jameis Winston, Johnny Manziel, Robert Griffin III, and Cam Newton all went on to win the Heisman.
