Derrick Henry wins Walter Camp Award
Alabama running back Derrick Henry is this year's Walter Camp Award winner.
The award goes to the most outstanding player in college football "who has exemplified the qualities of self-discipline, unselfish team play, desire to excel, mature judgement, and respect for leadership."
Henry faced stiff competition for the honor, beating out Iowa cornerback Desmond King, Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield, Stanford running back Christian McCaffrey, and Clemson quarterback Deshaun Watson.
This could be a sign of things to come when the Heisman Trophy is handed out on Saturday, with Henry, McCaffrey, and Watson all up for the most prestigious honor in college football. Jameis Winston and Marcus Mariota were the previous two winners of the Walter Camp Award, and both went on to claim the Heisman as well.
Henry, who becomes the first player from Alabama to win the award, led the FBS in rushing this season with and SEC-record 1,986 yards, and added 23 touchdowns. He topped 100 yards rushing in nine games, crossing the 200-yard plateau on four occasions.
