Report: Reds still trying to trade Chapman
The Cincinnati Reds still fully intend on trading Aroldis Chapman, and they feel a market remains.
Currently under investigation by Major League Baseball for his role in an alleged domestic violence incident involving his girlfriend, the Reds reportedly believe they can still trade the four-time All-Star despite the possibility looming that he could be suspended, according to Ken Rosenthal and Jon Morosi of FOX Sports.
The Reds and Los Angeles Dodgers had a deal in place on Monday before it was made public that Chapman fired gunshots in the garage of his Miami residence, and allegedly "choked" his girlfriend in October, according to a police report. It was reported earlier Thursday the Dodgers have moved on since learning about the incident.
Chapman is arguably the game's premier closer. The 27-year-old has converted 145 saves over the past four seasons and is coming off a year in which he posted a 1.63 ERA and 116 strikeouts over 66 1/3 innings.
Rosenthal notes that while Chapman is entering the final year of his deal, a possible suspension could give his team an extra year of control. If he receives a long suspension, he could remain under contract through 2017 as well. Chapman will need to be on an active roster or disabled list for at least 138 days in order to become a free agent.
