Hornets' Jefferson suspended 5 games for violating league's anti-drug program
The NBA announced Wednesday that Al Jefferson of the Charlotte Hornets has been suspended five games without pay for violating the NBA/NBPA anti-drug program.
Jefferson is currently out of action due to a strained left calf and wasn't expected to be available for at least another week. As a result, the suspension will begin "with the next NBA regular season game that he is eligible and physically able to play" according to an NBA email.
"I want to apologize to the Hornets organization, our owner, my teammates and my coaches for the poor decision that I made," Jefferson said in a joint statement with the team. "I know I have let people down ... from the bottom of my heart, I am truly sorry, and I am committed to making smarter decisions in the future."
Jefferson is averaging 16.9 points and nine rebounds in 17 games.
