Swansea City 'reluctantly' fires manager Garry Monk

Garry Monk's time at Swansea City has come to an end.

In the midst of an atrocious season that has the Swans one point above the relegation zone, the club finally confirmed what's been rumoured in recent weeks, firing the bench boss Wednesday.

Swansea chairman Huw Jenkins, who's watched his club win just once in its last 11 matches, outlined the difficult nature of the decision; Monk had been in charge at the Liberty Stadium since February 2014, and built on the loyal following that already existed as a result of the decade he spent with the club during his playing career.

"The decision has been made very reluctantly and with a heavy heart," the Welshman said. "To find ourselves in our current situation from where we were in the first week of September, and considering the drop of performance levels and run of results over the last three months, it has brought us to this unfortunate decision today."

Jenkins added, "It was not a decision we took lightly, especially given Garry's history and standing within the club. And it goes without saying that we wish Garry all the very best for the future and thank him for his tremendous service, not only as a player over the last decade, but also as our manager. He will always have a warm welcome at this football club."

Swansea noted that the search for a replacement is underway, with the club hoping to appoint a new bench boss "as soon as possible."

David Moyes, former boss Brendan Rodgers, and a host of others have been rumoured as potential replacements for Monk, whose status on the Swansea bench grew precarious over the past two months while the club went into a tailspin - falling all the way to 15th in the Premier League table at the time of his firing.
