Temple's Tyler Matakevich wins Nagurski Trophy

Tim Heitman / USA TODAY Sports

Temple linebacker Tyler Matakevich is the 2015 recipient of the Bronko Nagurski Trophy, given to the top defensive player in the FBS.

With 126 total tackles, he's the only FBS player to lead his team in tackles every game of the 2015 season. Matakevich is college football's active leader with 481 career tackles, giving him four consecutive years of 100-plus tackles.

"I didn't even think about (winning),” Matakevich told the Charlotte Observer's Corey Masisak. "I never would have thought I could be in this position. It's such a surreal experience."

Matakevich added five interceptions, 4.5 sacks, and five pass breakups to lead the 10-3 Owls to a berth in the Boca Raton Bowl.

He beat out Duke's Jeremy Cash, Alabama's Reggie Ragland, Clemson's Shaq Lawson, and Penn State's Carl Nassib.

"Just to be here with these big-time names and guys from Alabama, Clemson, Penn State, DukE ... It's such a humbling experience."
