Luca Toni plans to retire following the 2015-16 season, bringing an end to a career spanning 15 different clubs and more than two decades.

"Maybe the time has come to stop," the 38-year-old said after playing in Hellas Verona's 1-0 loss to Empoli. "And I want to do it by keeping Verona in Serie A."

Toni became the oldest player to ever win the scoring title in Italy last season, notching 22 goals along with Inter Milan's Mauro Icardi.

A knee injury in September sidelined the former Italy international for the next two months, and he only recently returned to the starting lineup.

Verona struggled in his absence, and still hasn't posted a single win, leaving the club in last place.

Toni's career ranks among the best strikers in Serie A history. He won the European Golden Shoe for scoring 31 league goals with Fiorentina during the 2005-06 season. He then hoisted the World Cup with the Azzurri in Berlin.

He moved to Bayern Munich in 2007 and won a Bundesliga title before returning to Italy on loan at Roma.

Short stays at Genoa, Juventus, and Al Nasr appeared to spell the end to his career, while the death of his newborn baby also devastated him and his family.

Toni found his own renaissance in Florence in 2012, rejoining La Viola and rediscovering his love for the game. He then joined Verona in 2013 as a free agent.
