Georgia, head coach Mark Richt 'mutually agreed' to part ways

Just one day after LSU coach Les Miles avoided the axe, it appears to have fallen on another SEC coaching heavyweight.

Following a 9-3 season, Georgia has parted ways with head coach Mark Richt.

Richt has held the position with the Bulldogs for 15 seasons, compiling a 145-51 record.

The 55-year-old led Georgia to six SEC East division titles and two conference championships, while taking home SEC coach of the year honors in 2002 and 2005.

"Coach Richt and I met Sunday morning to discuss the status of our football program," Georgia athletic director Greg McGarity said in a press release. "We mutually agreed that he would step down as head coach and would have the opportunity to accept other duties and responsibilities at UGA following the bowl game."

Failure to live up to high expectations as of late ultimately cost Richt his job, as the Bulldogs haven't qualified for the SEC championship game since 2012. Rumors swirled about a potential coaching change following Georgia's loss to Florida in late October, and a four-game winning streak to end the season wasn't enough to save his job.

Richt will have the opportunity to coach the Bulldogs in their upcoming bowl game.
