Celtics' Smart out next couple of weeks with leg injury

Boston Celtics point guard Marcus Smart will miss more than the team's current two-game road trip.

Prior to their matchup against the Brooklyn Nets on Sunday, head coach Brad Stevens revealed the Oklahoma State alumnus will be out at least the next couple of weeks as he recovers from a lower left leg injury (subluxation of the proximal tibfib joint), according to ESPN's Chris Forsberg.

The injury won't require surgery, although it may require him to sit out more than just a couple of weeks. Stevens added that it shouldn't be a long-term issue.

Smart, 21, was originally diagnosed with a bruised left knee during Friday's game against Brooklyn. He did not travel with the team as they play Sunday at Barclays Center, and Tuesday against the Atlanta Hawks at Philips Arena.

In nine appearances, Smart is averaging 9.8 points on 33.3 percent shooting, along with 3.8 rebounds, 3.2 assists, and 1.8 steals in 29.1 minutes per game to begin his sophomore year.

Isaiah Thomas - who finished second in Sixth Man of the Year voting last season - will continue to see starts at point guard while Smart misses time. Avery Bradley will also be reinserted into the starting lineup to fill the void at shooting guard.
