DFS: Short-term Forecast - Wes Welker

The St. Louis Rams signed oft-concussed WR Wes Welker to a one-year, incentive-laden contract. A desperation move if there ever was one, the Rams have averaged 176 passing yards per game: the lowest in the NFL. It's highly doubtful that Welker provides the spark the team needs, and thus will not provide DFS players with a shiny new option.

In large part due to Todd Gurley's incredible start to his career, St. Louis owns a middle of the pack 4-4 record. Without him, things would be much more dire. Making this move is extra odd since Welker may not play in Week 10.

Because of his late signing, he won't be available in most DFS games right away, anyway, so his eligibility is tied to Week 11 and beyond. It's hard to imagine him having any real impact in DFS. He is a familiar name, however, and people will reach for him thinking he'll be able to find old glory. Not likely.

After being a fixture in New England for six seasons, Welker took his talents to Denver in 2013. While he did manage to set a career high in TDs in his first of two seasons with the Broncos, he was targeted 64 fewer times than the year before. He was pegged to play a smaller role. The following year, he caught only 49 passes on 64 targets - his fewest since 2006 with the Miami Dolphins.

First, his health is a concern whether he wants to admit it or not - he doesn't. In 2013, he missed three games in connection to concussions. All told, he suffered three concussions over 10 months. It's not a judgment of his ability or his toughness. The wrong hit could take him down permanently.

Granted, that can be said of anyone in this game. He's just more likely to be impacted at age 34. He's immediately the oldest player on the roster and probably won't yield positive results in both reality and fantasy.

Then there's the Rams' quarterback situation. Nick Foles has thrown for 1,478 yards. That's good for 30th. He's thrown 7 TDs. That's tied with Ben Roethlisberger for 28th and Big Ben has played five games. The addition of Welker will not solve the Rams' anemic passing game.

Welker would be nothing more than a nostalgia play in DFS. While neither Kenny Britt nor Tavon Austin pose much of a threat, they are younger and already more established in the St. Louis offense. There's also Brian Quick, who is definitely on the roster if not featured in the passing attack. More importantly, St. Louis lives and dies on its running game. It's the Gurley show. Welker is there for the sake of variety.
