Alex Ovechkin set a record Tuesday, albeit not the one he was after.

Needing a single goal to pass Sergei Federov for the all-time lead for goals scored by a Russian-born player, the Washington Capitals superstar recorded an astounding 15 shots against the Detroit Red Wings, but was turned aside each and every time by goaltender Petr Mrazek.

The 15 shots matched the single-game high for the game's preeminent scorer, according to Chuck Gormley of CSN Washington.

Thanks to Mrazek's 38 saves overall, as well as Andreas Athanasiou's first career-goal, Detroit emerged with a 1-0 victory.

And with that, Ovechkin is denied the record while Fedorov - who was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame on Monday - watched on in the arena where he scored a good chunk of his 483 goals.

Washington's next game is set for Thursday in Philadelphia against the Flyers.
