Allardyce anticipates Sunderland youngster Watmore making big impact

Sunderland gaffer Sam Allardyce has high hopes for flame-haired youngster Duncan Watmore after he made his full debut for the Black Cats on Saturday.

The 21-year-old got the nod to play in a new-look attacking midfield at the Stadium of Light, and made a good impression on his boss.

"I think that he's got a little bit of something we haven't got here," Allardyce told the club website. "He's very quick and he likes to get in behind defenders, so hopefully he will be a big part of the squad this year."

Watmore featured five times in the Premier League last term, including a goal in his first appearance against Norwich City. He also struck in a League Cup win over Exeter City in August.

"He can score a goal and has scored a couple of goals so hopefully if he gets to play more he will start putting the ball in the back of the net," Allardyce said.

The former Altrincham man offers versatility across the midfield and in attack, putting various senior players' spots in the squad at risk.

"Healthy competition for places is always a good thing and he will be disappointed (by Saturday's defeat), but he's made his full debut and hopefully he can go on to better things from here," Allardyce added.

The club returns to action after the international break with a tough trip to Crystal Palace on Nov. 23.
