Padres make qualifying offers to Upton, Kennedy
The San Diego Padres extended qualifying offers to outfielder Justin Upton and right-hander Ian Kennedy prior to Friday's deadline.
Each player will have until Nov. 13 to decide whether or not they will accept the one-year, $15.8-million deal or enter free agency. The Padres would receive draft-pick compensation should either player reject the deal and sign elsewhere.
Upton was an All-Star in 2015 for the third time, hitting .251/.336/.454 with 26 home runs and 81 RBIs in 150 games, while stealing 19 bases. The 28-year-old is one of the top outfield free agents in this year's class and projects to land a deal in the range of six years, $130 million.
Kennedy has spent parts of the last three seasons in San Diego and went 9-15 with a 4.28 ERA across 30 starts in 2015. The 30-year-old missed time during the first month of the season with a hamstring strain. He went 26-30 with a 3.97 ERA over 73 starts with the Padres.
