Report: Grizzlies discussed potential deal involving Heat's Chalmers

The Miami Heat might have a taker for backup point guard Mario Chalmers' contract.

As ESPN's Marc Stein reports, the Memphis Grizzlies have discussed a potential trade with the Heat involving Chalmers, although no deal is imminent. Were a trade to be made, Grizzlies point guard Beno Udrih might be headed to South Beach in return, a source tells Stein.

The Heat have made no great secret of their intention to shed salary. Re-signing Dwyane Wade and Goran Dragic put the team into the luxury tax, and being that they're repeat offenders, Miami would be in line for significant financial penalties if they don't duck under this year's tax line of $84.7 million.

Miami's payroll currently sits at $91.8 million. Shedding Chalmers' $4.3-million price tag would save them nearly $12 million in tax payments.

Chalmers could be a good fit with the Grizzlies. He had a down year last season, but he's a decent spot-up shooter and possesses quick hands for steals. Granted, he's not a particularly strong playmaker or defender, but he could find minutes as a backup guard.

A third team would likely need to be involved should a deal be consummated. The Grizzlies are over the cap and don't have enough unguaranteed salary to match Chalmers' salary. Two teams that could help facilitate the move are the Philadelphia 76ers and Portland Trail Blazers, who both have an excess of cap space.
