Report: Cespedes not expected to re-sign with Mets

After almost single-handily pushing the New York Mets to their first postseason appearance since 2006, it appears that Yoenis Cespedes' time in Queens has come to a close.

The Mets are reportedly expected to make an offer to the soon-to-be free-agent outfielder, though a team official told Adam Rubin of ESPN that it's likely he'll sign elsewhere.

Cespedes and the Mets changed a clause in his contract in September that gives the team five days following the World Series to sign him long term. The 29-year-old, however, is likely to command a six-year deal, and it's unknown if the Mets are eager to commit to that type of term or money.

The top available outfielder on the free-agent market, Cespedes has said he's open to staying with the Mets, but also acknowledged it's too early to make a decision.

"It's been an incredible experience," Cespedes said. "A very special experience for me.

"My agent told me that we'll see what's going on around December or so. It's just too early."

Cespedes slashed .287/.337/.604 with 17 home runs and 44 RBIs in 57 games since coming over from Detroit at the non-waiver deadline. He's hit at least 22 home runs in each of his four seasons in the majors.

The Mets have plenty of money tied up in a pair of veteran outfielders. Curtis Granderson is owed $31 million over the next two seasons, while Michael Cuddyer has one year and $12.5 million remaining on his deal.
