Eddie Johnson retires after 10-year MLS career
D.C. United forward Eddie Johnson is hanging up his boots.
The 31-year-old U.S. international announced his retirement on Sunday, ahead of his side's Eastern Conference Semifinal first-leg fixture against the New York Red Bulls, bringing to a close a 10-year career in Major League Soccer.
His retirement was first reported back in May, after the striker was diagnosed with a heart condition, and his contract was also reportedly voided by the league, too. Johnson has not played since the end of the 2014 season.

"Eddie had many outstanding accomplishments during his career and was a valuable member of the team during his time with D.C. United," club GM Dave Kasper said in a statement. "He will be missed but always remembered as he moves on beyond the playing field."
Johnson ends his career with 71 goals and 21 assists in 202 appearances. Internationally, Johnson made 63 appearances with the United States national team, scoring 19 goals, making him the eighth-highest top scorer in the team's history.
