Anthopoulos named Sporting News' Executive of the Year

Alex Anthopoulos was honored by the Sporting News the same day he left the Toronto Blue Jays.

The outgoing general manager was named the publication's MLB Executive of the Year moments before joining a conference call to address his departure from the Blue Jays.

Anthopoulos was chosen by a panel of 47 major-league executives, with voting concluding before the start of the playoffs.

The Sporting News has recognized the top MLB executive since 1936. The 38-year-old is the first member of the Blue Jays' management to receive the honor.

Anthopoulos landed David Price and Troy Tulowitzki in trade deadline deals, also acquiring Josh Donaldson and signing Russell Martin last November.
