Jermaine Jones seeks pricey extension with Revolution

American midfielder Jermaine Jones has enjoyed his time with the New England Revolution so much that he's seeking a contract extension with the club to keep him at Gillette Stadium for a bit longer.

The German-born U.S. international is in the final year of his contract with the Revolution. He joined the team as a Designated Player after he made his name known to fans in the United States during the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

Jones' 18-month deal will expire at the end of the 2015 season and the 33-year-old is looking to negotiate a deal close to his current salary of $3 million. He's an expensive option for the Revs, but Jones says he's not looking to take on a reduced wage to stick around.

"Everybody knows that it's easy to know the numbers of other players - you can just look it up," Jones told reporters Wednesday (and he's right: here they are). "The club knows what I want, my agent knows it, and I'll be focused that we'll make it the same as last season."

Jones added, "I've always said I'm happy here. I like it, my family likes it. But at the end of the day, we all know that the numbers have to be right, too."

While Jones was instrumental last season for the Revs - he helped guide the Revolution to the MLS Cup final - his contributions this year have been minimal. He's made 17 appearances this season and hasn't scored or assisted at all.

Still, he's a regular U.S. international, and, as Michael Bradley, Clint Dempsey, and Jozy Altidore show, that tag usually comes with a pretty paycheck.
