Report: Manchester City facing charges after fans boo tournament anthem

Manchester City may be facing charges by UEFA after the club's fans booed the Champions League anthem prior to kickoff against Sevilla on Wednesday.

It is one of the most iconic opening theme songs in sports. But for Manchester City supporters, the Champions League anthem is just a nuisance that gets in the way of getting an important game up and running.

Such was the disdain at the Etihad Stadium that when the anthem played, supporters showed their displeasure against the formality with a ringing round of boos.

BOOOOOOOOOOO

The case will reportedly be heard by the UEFA Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body on November 19.

The Telegraph reports that a case has been opened against the club for the incident. Manchester City could be facing a fine, though, UEFA reportedly explained that the disciplinary case does not necessarily mean the club is facing sanctions of any sort.

This isn't a new occurrence, either - fans have regularly booed the Champions League anthem during games after the team was sanctioned and fined £50-million for breaching UEFA Financial Fair Play regulations in 2014.

City fans are also rightfully upset with UEFA after CSKA Moscow fans were allowed access to a match against the English outfit despite the game being under sanction and meant to be played behind closed doors in Russia. Still, roughly 700 Russian supporters managed to find their way inside the stadium at the time and went unpunished by UEFA after the fact.

Should City be fined or punished by UEFA for this latest incident, it is likely that the relationship between the two will further sour.
