DFS: Don't Believe the Hype - Week 7 Edition

Tim Fuller / USA TODAY Sports

Here are three players unlikely to repeat their success of Week 6:

QB Matthew Stafford, Lions (vs. Vikings)

He did it! He finally did it! Stafford had a good - nay, great - game in DFS in Week 6. For those masochistic enough to have taken a flier, there were many rewards to reap.

He looked borderline elite, throwing for 405 yards with four touchdowns and one truly awful interception. This against a Bears team that is still sixth in the NFL in passing yards allowed per game.

But you can't expect Stafford to string together consecutive weeks of mastery. Even though his Week 2 start against the Vikings was probably his second best, it wasn't great. Before Week 6, he had an abysmal TD:INT ratio of 6:8. He makes too many big mistakes to be counted on despite his ability to have big games. The risk is way too high despite the potential for reward.

TE Benjamin Watson, Saints (at Colts)

Week 6 was an anomalous performance if there ever was one. It was the first time since 2010 that Watson hauled in 100 or more yards, and only the third time in his 12-year career.

He already has more receptions and receiving yards than in either of the last two seasons. Granted, he did have Jimmy Graham above him on the depth chart, but a one-week explosion should not have DFS players jumping at him.

Watson is still very inexpensive, but he could just as easily deliver nothing than something. He will likely never have as good a game as he did last weekend.

RB LeGarrette Blount, Patriots (vs. Jets)

The Patriots seem unstoppable, and they might be. Blount, however cannot be relied upon week in and week out. Week 7 is a week when you absolutely need to look the other way.

It all comes down to the Jets' stout run defense. This does not shape up well for Blount or any member of the Patriots' ground game. The Jets were shaky to start the year, but neither the Dolphins nor Redskins could get much traction.

Besides, the Patriots' week-to-week game plan is notoriously unpredictable. Selecting Blount in DFS will infuriate players far more often than he frustrates those who fade him. Look elsewhere for consistency.
