No words.

Up 23-21 with 10 seconds left on the clock against Michigan State, Michigan needed to run one final play to let time expire.

Michigan elected to punt, but a muffed snap led to the Spartans swooping up the loose ball and running it into the end zone, giving Michigan State the improbable 27-23 victory on the road.

Here's what you need to know:

  • Michigan had no business losing this game and Michigan State had no business winning it. But with one play left, the Wolverines blew it, as the Spartans somehow came out on top to remain undefeated.
  • Jalen Watts-Jackson, the hero who scored the game-winning touchdown, suffered a dislocated hip on the play, according to a Michigan State official, and was taken to hospital.
  • A Michigan win would've truly signaled Jim Harbaugh's arrival in Ann Arbor. Instead, the head coach will face the music, as the two-loss Wolverines are likely out of the playoff picture thanks to one shocking play.
  • Michigan linebacker and leading tackler Joe Bolden was ejected in the first quarter on a controversial targeting call. On the play, it appeared he was pushed into Michigan State quarterback Connor Cook, but after review, officials upheld the call on the field.
  • With a shutout in the first quarter, Michigan went 13 consecutive quarters without giving up a point. That streak was broken when the Spartans scored a touchdown in the second frame.
  • Of the two quarterbacks, Cook easily had the better outing, as the senior threw for 328 yards and a touchdown. Jake Rudock couldn't find his stride, only managing to throw for 168 yards without a score.
  • On the ground, neither team rushed much, though the Spartans' L.J. Scott and Wolverines' Sione Houma rushed for two touchdowns apiece on 16 and 30 yards, respectively.
  • Despite the loss, Michigan's Jabrill Peppers turned some heads with his versatility, as the safety accounted for 164 all-purpose yards.

Play of the Game

How this happened is unfathomable. Michigan was a snap away from supplanting the Spartans as the state of Michigan's team. Instead, a bizarre ending - that'll be replayed for years to come - led to a Wolverines loss. Just watch this to understand:

Up next, Michigan will get a week off before hosting Minnesota on Oct. 31, while Michigan State will play host to Indiana next Saturday.
