Sporting Kansas City books playoff berth at San Jose's expense

Reuters

Sporting Kansas City faced what was, on the surface, a daunting proposition heading into a frantic final day of the MLS regular season: defeat the star-laden LA Galaxy, or face the possibility of missing the playoffs.

Mission accomplished. That's why they play the games, we suppose.

Peter Vermes' club got goals either side of the interval from Kevin Ellis and Dom Dwyer - the latter coming courtesy of yet another inch-perfect assist from Benny Feilhaber - and that was enough render Robbie Keane's goal meaningless in a 2-1 win.

The victory saw Sporting KC grab the sixth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference, and leaves San Jose on the outside looking in - just as they were coming into the final day of the campaign.
