Benteke, Firmino compound Liverpool's injury misery

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp will be missing some serious firepower for his Premier League match this weekend.

News surfaced Thursday morning that Danny Ings, a summer acquisition from Burnley who has tallied two goals in three Premier League starts, could be out roughly six months with a cruciate ligaments injury.

Liverpool's options up front worsened with the news that Christian Benteke and Roberto Firmino are both unavailable for Saturday's trip to Tottenham Hotspur, Klopp confirmed.

And making matters worse, teenage defender Joe Gomez is facing a long layoff with an ACL injury.

"Benteke and Firmino are on their way. They are back on the pitch, not in team training but they are getting better and better," Klopp said. "I don't know exactly when they will come back, but I hope next week into normal team training and then we will be able to see how good a shape they are in, how fit they are and how well they feel."

According to the new gaffer, the games against Tottenham and Rubin Kazan are extremely unlikely to feature either of the pair, but he's marked Southampton's visit on Oct. 25 as a potential date for their returns.

"We have to wait until next week. For sure, not Saturday. And Thursday, I don’t think so. Maybe (next) Sunday," he said.

Liverpool's away match in North London is one of the most eagerly anticipated of the weekend. It will be the first time Klopp will take the technical area in English football after the former Dortmund manager confirmed his appointment on Merseyside last week.
