DFS: Mystery Men - Thursday's Top Sleeper Plays

Bruce Fedyck / Reuters

The marquee matchup for day two of the NHL season is between the high-powered offenses of Pittsburgh and Dallas. Select these cheap and contrarian players to compliment some of the stars from that matchup.

Here are the top mystery men for Thursday.

G: Ondrej Pavelec, Jets (vs. Bruins)

Pavelec comes at a low price relative to other starting goalies for most DFS pricing. He is probably not the goalie you want to start in a cash game, but he may be worth taking a flier on in tournament games. It is unlikely Pavelec will see a high percentage of ownership so he is a solid contrarian play specific to the goalie position.

For their season opener, Pavelec and the Jets take on the new and not so improved Bruins. The Bruins will open the 2015-16 season without names like Milan Lucic, Johnny Boychuk, Dougie Hamilton, Dennis Seidenberg, and possibly Zdeno Chara. Without these big names, the Bruins are not the team they once were, which is further evidenced by their ninth place finish in the East last year, and Pavelec could be in line to start this season 1-0.

C: Sam Reinhart, Sabres (vs. Senators)

With Sabres captain Brian Gionta day-to-day because of a lower body injury, Reinhart may be provided the opportunity to open the season alongside Evander Kane and Jack Eichel. Reinhart should also see power-play time with Gionta out - boosting his fantasy value.

As last year's second overall pick, Reinhart will be looking to impress Sabres new coach, Dan Bylsma, and earn a roster spot so personal motivation should be an early season advantage. DFS players need to monitor Gionta's health to ensure Reinhart will be provided the opportunity expected.

W: Nathan Gerbe, Hurricanes (vs. Predators)

Gerbe lands himself on this list because of his very low price and high shots on goal average (3.01) that ranked 36th in 2014-15. Most DFS sites award partial points for shots on goal so Gerbe should earn points even if he fails to score.

Admittedly, Gerbe won't stuff the stat sheet but his low price, spot alongside playmaker Jordan Stall, and power play time make him a value-friendly pick. Gerbe's low price should allow you to pair two star forwards together but not entirely abandon a roster position. Gerbe should be rostered in a tournament rather than cash game.

D: Rasmus Ristolainen, Sabres (vs. Senators)

If you are wondering who Ristolainen is, he was Buffalo's eighth overall pick in the 2013 draft and is beginning his second full season with the Sabres. Ristolainen stands at 6-foot-4 and brings a big shot with that frame. Buffalo coach, Dan Bylsma, has high expectations for Ristolainen this year and should provide him the opportunity to produce.

This year, Ristolainen is expected to be the lone defenseman on Buffalo's top power play unit which includes: Jack Eichel, Evander Kane, Matt Moulson, and Marcus Foligno. Being the lone defenseman on that unit should urge him to put the puck on net and create scoring opportunities.
