DFS: Don't Believe the Hype - Week 5 Edition

Don't do it. Don't commit a high percentage of your total budget to a guy coming off a career week. Even though these selections could very easily succeed on the field, their prices in DFS do not reflect realistic expectations.

Whether it's because of a dodgy matchup or an inflated salary, think twice before rostering the following:

TE Martellus Bennett, Bears (at Chiefs)

Bennett was a great value play in Week 4. He helped a ton of lineups reach their full potential with an 11 catch, 83 yard, one TD performance against the Raiders. They were all season bests as a returning Jay Cutler kept slinging the ball in his direction.

Predictably, his cost has risen just in time for a letdown game against the Chiefs. The Bengals' Tyler Eifert is the only tight end to record more than 20 yards receiving against Kansas City. No tight end has hauled in a TD. Don't buy into Bennett this week.

RB Devonta Freeman, Falcons (vs. Redskins)

Yes, Freeman occupied this space last week. Yes, he then proceeded to score three touchdowns for the second consecutive week. Freeman might very well be the real deal.

He's been unstoppable in Tevin Coleman's absence. If he dismantles Washington's run block as he did against Houston and Dallas, he'll have a stranglehold on the starting job and cash game lineups.

But there's a problem - and it's two-fold. Freeman is now priced accordingly, meaning he is no longer a value pick. Those days are done. Secondly, he's now on everyone's radar. This could make him a decent cash game play, but it reduces his value in GPPs.

QB Andy Dalton, Bengals (vs. Seahawks)

Dalton is having a wonderful season. He's proven that he belongs among the league's elite and is constantly undervalued considering his results so far. This is not the week to buy in.

This is purely a matchup fade. The Seahawks don't give up passing yards and they don't give up passing TDs. Only the Broncos have allowed fewer touchdown passes. Look for Dalton to play conservatively to avoid making mistakes. This might prove effective, but it won't be a winner in fantasy.

Don't mistake this as a permanent notion. In Week 6, Dalton will get the chance to unload on the Bills' swiss cheese secondary. Dalton has proven himself as a dependable hand but you're better off with Carson Palmer against the Lions or Sam Bradford against the Saints if you're looking to skimp at QB.
