Report: Giants' Daniel Fells diagnosed with MRSA

Brad Penner / USA TODAY Sports

New York Giants tight end Daniel Fells has been diagnosed with MRSA, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports.

MRSA (Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus) is a bacterium that can be responsible for several dangerous and difficult-to-treat infections.

Fells was placed on season-ending injured reserve Monday after undergoing ankle surgery and spending the weekend in hospital.

The Giants have reportedly consulted with disease specialists and scrubbed their facilities in an attempt to prevent spread of MRSA.

Three Tampa Bay Buccaneers players were diagnosed with MRSA in 2013. Kicker Lawrence Tynes was forced to retire because of the infection and is now suing the team.
