Toronto FC tops Philadelphia Union, first-ever playoff berth still on hold
Toronto FC completed part one of its two-part mission Saturday night, defeating the Philadelphia Union 3-1 at BMO Field to put the Reds' franchise-first MLS playoff berth within reach.
Sebastian Giovinco caught Blue Jays fever with his opening effort, scoring an RBI single a free-kick goal off a deflection from the wall and then giving the Jays a hat tip with his goal celebration.

Jozy Altidore scored a second for Toronto FC with a smart first touch off a cross, but Philadelphia got one back courtesy of Canadian defender Steven Vitoria. A late own goal by Richie Marquez off a Jonathan Osorio run gave Toronto its third marker of the night, though.

With the 3-1 win, Toronto FC fulfilled its portion of the three-match scenario through which it could have qualified early for the MLS postseason. New York City FC lost to D.C. United, fulfilling the second qualifier.
However, a playoff berth must wait, as Orlando City beat the Montreal Impact 2-1 on Saturday night. A Montreal win or draw would have given TFC its first playoff appearance in club history. Montreal would have qualified with a win, too, and sent New England and Columbus to the dance.
Orlando City ruined the party for everyone but Orlando City.
