The start to Jack Grealish's career with the English national team was put on hold after Aston Villa boss Tim Sherwood blocked an invite from Roy Hodgson to have him join the Three Lions for a training session.

The English manager was hopeful of getting the 20-year-old involved with his new teammates, but accepts Sherwood's stance to leave him out until a later date in order for Grealish to improve his fitness.

"We wanted to induct him into the England way," Hodgson told the BBC.

"Tim made it clear it wasn't a good idea as far as he was concerned because he is behind after missing preseason."

Sherwood's decision to delay Grealish's senior international career comes days after the young midfielder chose England over the Republic of Ireland, whom he represented at the under-21 level.

"The Football Association wanted him to come up to show that they were pleased that he had chosen England," Hodgson said.

"We often have young players training with us when we are up there. It wouldn't have been a problem.

"But the thing he has to do now of course is to make certain through his performances for Aston Villa that he merits selection. Hopefully when November comes around he will be available."

If all goes well with the Midlands team, Grealish will have a chance to win his first cap when England plays a pair of friendlies against Spain and France on Nov. 17 and 13, respectively.
