Hornets' Frank Kaminsky: 'I'm not weird'

Robert Deutsch-USA TODAY Sports

One of the NBA's most entertaining rookies doesn't want people to get it twisted: he might be a little unorthodox, but he's really just a normal guy.

That was the message from Frank Kaminsky at Charlotte Hornets media day on Friday, with the 7-footer fighting against a certain label that may have been thrown his way in the past.

"I'm not weird," Kaminsky said. "I might come off weird sometimes. That's just how I've always been. I like having fun and joking around. I appreciate it when people enjoy my silliness."

Calling Kaminsky weird probably isn't fair. It's great when players can show a little personality and connect with fans, something Kaminsky has been doing regularly since being selected with the No. 9 pick in June.

He posed for a ridiculous photo alongside Wisconsin teammate Sam Dekker at the rookie photo shoot. He called "Contemporary Dance" and "Vampires in Western Literature" his favorite college courses. Even before the draft, he was among the best freshmen at dramatically reciting Drake lyrics and competed in postseason dance-offs against Jahlil Okafor.

None of that's weird, necessarily. People like what they like and are who they are, and it's hardly the worst way for a public figure to endear himself to fans.

Now it's on "Mr. Steal Your Girl" to endear himself to fans on the court, too.
