FA charges Gabriel with improper conduct for Chelsea kerfuffle; Arsenal will appeal

Arsenal swiftly announced it will appeal the three-match ban handed to Gabriel Paulista, as well as the improper conduct charge he was issued Monday following an altercation with Chelsea forward Diego Costa over the weekend.

The Premier League team issued a statement that it will appeal Gabriel's "wrongful dismissal" after the Football Association charged the centre-back for his reaction to match official Mike Dean's decision to remove him from the fixture.

Costa was subsequently charged by the English governing body for an incident missed by the referee when the forward clashed with Laurent Koscielny moments before halftime.

The FA retroactively charged Costa with an alleged act of violence after footage of the match revealed the altercation with the Arsenal defender.

The association outlined its process for reviewing incidents retroactively:

Off the ball incidents which are not seen at the time by the match officials are referred to a panel of three former elite referees. Each referee panel member will review the video footage independently of one another to determine whether they consider it a sending-off offence. For retrospective action to be taken, and an FA charge to follow, the decision by the panel must be unanimous.

Meanwhile, midfielder Santi Cazorla was warned by the FA for his behaviour after he received a second yellow card and was sent off during the second half.

The final charges were against the two teams for their failure to control players during the heated contest at Stamford Bridge.

The two London rivals, and Gabriel, have until 6 p.m. BST on Thursday to respond to their respective charges.
